Description

The unit covers the knowledge and understanding of electricity supply industry (ESI) safety rules for work on, near, or in the vicinity of ESI electrical apparatus. It includes the relevant state and territory safety rules, and organisational workplace requirements and how it applies to ESI workers to meet work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS), mobility and mutual aid requirements.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this unit.

Course aim

This unit provides the learner with the knowledge and application of Electrical Supply Industry (ESI) safety rules and codes of practice for work on, near or in the vicinity of ESI electrical apparatus. It includes the Victorian Electrical Supply Industry (VESI) safety rules, and organisational workplace requirements.

Target learner group

Persons required to work on or near electrical apparatus.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this unit, a learner should be able to:

  • Identify the relevant ESI safety rules, codes of practice for the VESI Distribution Networks
  • Identify and explain relevant definitions and clauses within the Blue/Green book on safety, training and authorisations
  • Identify the requirements of performing a risk assessment (JSA) to determine possible workplace hazards and assigning appropriate risk control measures
  • Identify the causes and explain the role of the Safety Observer from the Blue/Green book
  • Identify the requirements for the Safe Approach to Electrical Apparatus within the Victorian Electrical Supply Industry
  • Identify the SAD for persons working on or near NV and LV electrical apparatus and the safe use of vehicles or mobile plant
  • Identify and explain actions to undertake in an emergency from the Blue/Green book
  • Describe the purpose and application of the various VESI forms

Assessment approach

Learners are assessed using the following methods

  • Theory and written assessments.
  • Direct observation and practical assessment.

Course entry requirements

Learners in this course are required:

  • To have basic literacy and numeracy skills so learners can understand the theory and assessments.
  • Hold the current certification in the required prerequisites.
  • Be sufficiently fit to participate in training.

Accreditation status

Nationally recognised training.

On successful completion of this course, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
