Description

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to obtain authorisation (sanction) to carry out electrical testing. It covers understanding regulatory and workplace requirements, interpreting safety and technical information, following procedures to receive approval, and ensuring all pre-testing safety checks are completed before conducting tests on electrical apparatus.

Prerequisites

UET30621 Certificate III in ESI – Distribution Overhead or UET30812 Certificate III in ESI – Power Systems – Distribution Cable Jointing or UETDREL005 Works safely near live electrical apparatus

Course aim

On completion, learners will have the knowledge and skills to receive Sanction for Testing (SFT) as required by The Blue Book and The Green Book.

Target learner group

For High Voltage Testers who will be required to receive SFT for the purpose of gaining access to electrical apparatus to perform electrical testing that cannot be completed under the terms of an Electrical Access Permit (EAP).

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this unit, a learner should be able to:

  • Identify the requirements of the SFT Procedures used within the Electrical Supply Industry.
  • Identify the hazards associated with electrical apparatus in a manner other than prescribed by the EAP procedure.
  • Demonstrate the ability to safely and effectively be a tester in charge of a test site with due consideration of the task at hand, members of the work party and the general public.

Assessment approach

Learners are assessed using the following methods

  • Theory and written assessments.
  • Direct observation and practical assessment.

Course entry requirements

Learners in this course are required:

  • To have basic literacy and numeracy skills so learners can understand the theory and assessments.
  • Hold the current certification in the required prerequisites.
  • Be sufficiently fit to participate in training. (especially if there are physical elements or field-work context)

Accreditation status

On successful completion of this course, learners will receive a completion certificate.

Equipment & PPE

Learners are required to have the following Personal Protective Equipment:

Safety helmet, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, safety glasses and insulated gloves.
