Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. This unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

There are no prerequisites for this unit.

Course aim

On completion, learners will be able to respond to an emergency, perform CPR procedures, communicate details of the incident and review the incident.

Target learner group

For persons who may need to provide CPR in a workplace or community setting.

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing this unit, a learner should be able to:

  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor
  • Follow the prompts of an automated external defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
  • Demonstrate a rotation of single rescuer operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
  • Respond appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
  • Hand over to emergency services
  • Provide an accurate verbal report of the incident
  • Review the incident
  • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR (5 cycles both compressions and ventilations) on an infant resuscitation manikin placed on a firm surface.

Assessment approach

Learners are assessed using the following methods

  • Theory and written assessments.
  • Direct observation and practical assessment.

Course entry requirements

Learners in this course are required:

  • To have basic literacy and numeracy skills so learners can understand the theory and assessments.
  • Hold the current certification in the required prerequisites.
  • Be sufficiently fit to participate in training.

Accreditation status

Nationally recognised training. On successful completion of this course, learners will receive a statement of attainment.
