Description

This course covers the skills and knowledge to act as a Safety Observer (‘Spotter / No Go Zone Assessor’) when working near overhead powerlines or underground service assets. It covers relevant safety legislation, hazard identification, safe-work practices, required clearances (‘No Go Zones’), use of signalling and communication, pre-start checks, risk assessments, personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency procedures. On completion, participants are eligible for registration with Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) as a qualified Spotter — able to guide plant and equipment safely around electrical and service-asset hazards.

Prerequisites

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Course aim

On completion, learners will be able to apply the knowledge and skills to guide people, plant and equipment to safe working distances and not to enter established No Go Zones.

Target learner group

For persons who act as a designated electrical Spotter.

Learners are assessed using the following methods

  • Theory and written assessments.
  • Direct observation and practical assessment.

Course entry requirements

Learners in this course are required:

  • To have basic literacy and numeracy skills so learners can understand the theory and assessments.
  • Hold the current certification in the required prerequisites.
  • Be sufficiently fit to participate in training. (especially if there are physical elements or field-work context)

Accreditation status

On successful completion of this course, learners will receive a completion certificate.

Equipment & PPE

Learners are required to have the following Personal Protective Equipment:
Safety helmet, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing, safety glasses and insulated gloves.
